That reaction gave the presentation a significance beyond a standard award handoff.
Instead of simply announcing a winner, the segment highlighted the relationship between influence and artistic legacy. Jackson represented an earlier generation of performers whose work helped establish new standards for music videos, choreography, fashion, performance, and pop-R&B crossover.
Taylor, meanwhile, represents a later generation whose career has developed across several creative disciplines.

Why the Janet Jackson Appearance Mattered
Janet Jackson’s appearance carried significance because of the two artists’ different places in music and entertainment history.
Jackson’s career helped redefine what a major pop and R&B performer could accomplish through albums, music videos, choreography, touring, and visual storytelling. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame describes her as one of the most successful and groundbreaking artists of the 1980s and 1990s.
Her influence also extends well beyond individual songs.
Janet Jackson’s Influence on Performance
Jackson’s work has consistently combined music with choreography and visual presentation. Her career is particularly associated with ambitious music videos and highly choreographed live performances.
The Recording Academy notes that Jackson has received 26 Grammy nominations and five wins. Her Grammy-winning work includes projects connected to songs and videos such as “Rhythm Nation,” “Got ‘Til It’s Gone,” “Scream,” and “All for You.”
Her album Rhythm Nation 1814 is also part of the Grammy Hall of Fame, with the Recording Academy celebrating its induction in 2026.
A Connection Between Generations
The Teyana Taylor presentation reflected one of the most interesting aspects of award shows: established artists can publicly recognize the performers who have followed them.
The 2026 BET Awards made that connection especially visible.
Taylor’s reaction showed that Jackson was not simply another celebrity appearing at the event. She was an artist whose work had personal and professional meaning for the person receiving the award.
BET itself framed the moment as an example of one generation of Black women in entertainment recognizing another.
Janet Jackson’s Career Legacy
Understanding why her appearance attracted so much attention requires some context about Jackson’s career.
From Television to Music
Jackson began performing publicly at a young age as part of the Jackson family and appeared on television before establishing herself as a solo recording artist.
Her breakthrough came with the 1986 album Control. The project marked a major shift in her artistic identity and established her as a powerful solo performer in her own right.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame identifies Control as a breakthrough and describes Jackson’s collaboration with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis as an important part of that transformation.
Rhythm Nation and Cultural Impact
Her 1989 album Rhythm Nation 1814 expanded that success while incorporating social themes into a commercially successful pop and R&B project.
According to the Recording Academy, the album produced seven Top 5 hits and earned Jackson her first Grammy win for its long-form music video. The album was later selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry.
Grammy and Hall of Fame Recognition
Jackson’s professional achievements include five Grammy wins and 26 nominations, according to the Recording Academy.
She was also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.
These honors help explain why her appearance at the 2026 BET Awards carried additional weight. She was presenting an award to another entertainer while also embodying the kind of long-term influence that an Icon of the Year honor is designed to recognize.
What Happened at the 2026 BET Awards?
The Janet Jackson segment was only one part of a much larger ceremony.
The 2026 BET Awards included musical performances, tributes, special honors, and surprise appearances. Lauryn Hill received the inaugural Living Legend Icon Award, while music executive Sylvia Rhone received the Ultimate Icon Award.

Teyana Taylor ultimately became one of the ceremony’s biggest recipients, collecting four awards.
